September 5th. Home after blood patch

Well… I am home..again. Recovering. It’s been a long week to say the least. I had a little set back yesterday ending up in the emergency room. When I was released from the hospital originally on Tuesday, it was right after I had a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) These can sometimes cause spinal headaches and I did have a headache after but I wanted to go home so bad I just told myself it would be fine and left anyway. That was a mistake. The headache got worse over the next couple days. I was told to make sure I stay lying in my back. So I was in bed on my back for all of Tuesday and Wednesday. It’s crazy how a soft pillow can feel like a piece of concrete after that long. Anyway by Thursday I could not even lift my head without severe tugging in my head. The pain was worse standing. By this time I was also throwing up. We decided to go into Abbott but because I couldn’t take it anymore it was so painful. Once I got there they admitted me to ER and finally gave me some anti nausea and pain meds. Then I needed a blood patch. What happened was that there was a leak of spinal fluid after my spinal tap causing my brain to feel like it’s being tugged. A blood patch is where they inject your own blood around the site where the leak is happening and it clots it thus resolving the headache almost instantly. Wish I would have done that sooner but it’s done. I’m home. I’m still sore and I still have a little bit of a headache but a normal headache that will just take some time to get back to normal. I am so thankful for doctors and nurses and medics and all the people involved in helping people in serious pain like that. It really just amazes me and makes me so grateful. You never really think about that or think about it enough until something happens to you. And thank God for medicine!!!!
